Senior Presentation Designer (or Visual Communications Manager)

Position Summary:

Candidate is a champion of visual grammar, creating and implementing compelling graphics and effective, cutting-edge design. Candidate demonstrates ability to provide alternative solutions to optimally convey challenging scientific concepts and exhibits expertise in traditional methods of data display. The individual understands and is readily capable of incorporating editorial best practices while demonstrating a strong focus on design and layout of PowerPoint presentations and layout and production of print design projects. Work product also includes being responsible for incorporation of team (client, advisor, and author) revisions and building confidence with advisors and clients when handling their slides, scientific posters, mock-ups, and presentation materials (onsite and off-site).

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in visual communication/graphic design or related field of study
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of visual communication experience in medical communications, with working knowledge of American Medical Association (AMA) style
  • Expertise in PowerPoint (see below for other creative tool proficiency)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Deep understanding of technical aspects of visual presentation (charts and graphs, data packages such as SigmaScan, etc) and ability to create various types of scientific graphs (Kaplan-Meier, log curves, etc)
  • Demonstrates an ability to acquire scientific knowledge and use related terminology and acronyms
  • Experience/Proficiency with PC and Macintosh operating systems, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Presenter), and Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
  • Conceptual Creativity: Has ability to think in abstract terms; can make connections between unrelated notions; can formulate innovative ideas; is seen as original and valuable in brainstorming sessions
  • Understanding and Implementing Direction: Can understand creative direction based on objectives and executes creative work effectively; communicates workload appropriately based on skill sets and talents; communicates well with others on workload issues and needs, progress of work, and results
  • Industry Application: Understands medical language; is capable of incorporating oral content into slides in real-time; has technical savvy; is good at quickly learning new industry, company, product, and technical knowledge developments of the client's business as well as the agency's business; has the functional and technical knowledge and skills to perform at a high level of accomplishment; takes the initiative to learn and incorporate new technologies proactively
  • Excellent typing skills and knowledge of medical terminology spelling
  • Experience with electronic detailing tools (Proscape Technologies, iPad, etc)

Position Responsibilities:

Demonstrates behavior expected of a professional member of the organization, including but not limited to:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with ability to work closely with scientific advisors, staff members, and client
  • Be a team player with a positive, can-do attitude!
  • Oversees, implements, and is keeper of all slide content and client/author style
  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills, with a specific focus on proactive alternative solutions
  • Has strong design focus (illustrator skills are a bonus), sense, and skills; demonstrates the ability to learn quickly and handle multiple projects in a dynamic business environment; has good sense of typography and print production process, trafficking, and pre-press procedures
  • Current on trends in design, typography, editorial standards, and visual communication
  • Delivers superior design work despite time restrictions
  • Understands how to develop visually appealing yet scientifically appropriate PowerPoint templates at optimized file size and resolution
  • Ability to pick up projects midstream and carry visual consistency through all stages of design and production
  • Willing to travel to clients (up to 30%) for regulatory review meetings and advisory board meetings

Participates in other activities:

  • Performs other job duties as assigned
  • Educates staff on visual communication "tricks of the trade"
  • Cross-trains in other positions as requested
  • Stays abreast of the latest in visual design technology and software releases, as well as AMA style
