Medical Editor (ME)
FLSA Status:
Reports To: Editorial Director (ED)
Department: Editorial
Supervises: N/A
Position Summary:
Midlevel editorial position. ME performs all levels of editing, including proofreading, copyediting, substantive editing, and data checking. Also performs project management duties as assigned by ED.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree (minimum), preferably in communications or health sciences field
- 3 years of professional editing experience, including data verification of medical/scientific documents
- Healthcare communication agency experience (preferred)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
- Thorough understanding of grammar rules and medical and pharmaceutical terminology
- Strong organizational, multitasking, prioritizing, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and ability to adhere to strict deadlines as well as the flexibility to handle changing deadlines
- Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team in a challenging, fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Familiarity with American Medical Association (AMA) style manual; researching and referencing skills
- Proficiency in use of the following computer software: Microsoft Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
Position Responsibilities:
Demonstrates behavior expected of a professional member of the organization, including but not limited to:
- Medical editing
- Copyediting and proofreading to ensure consistency and conformance with established grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules, as well as adherence to AMA, client, and house style guidelines
- Substantive editing of complex documents and verifying factual information to ensure information is accurate, clear, and precise
- Working with medical writer and other team members to ensure documents are of high quality in terms of scientific content, organization, clarity, accuracy, format, and consistency
- Editing of the following types of material: manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals; slide and poster presentations for scientific meetings; formulary dossiers; product monographs; sales training material; and promotional material
- Identifying material that requires copyright permission and requesting permission
- Willing to work extra hours when necessary to meet impending deadlines
Participates in professional growth and development:
- Attends company-sponsored in-services and/or continuing education events
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations as necessary
Participates in other activities:
- Performs other job duties as assigned
